If you own a generator, you can take a portable supply of electricity with you so you can recharge wherever you stop. Generators cost hundreds or thousands of dollars and need to be refueled or recharged, but when you have one, they are incredibly handy. Generators can be used for powering electronics and appliances, and can even supply power to your electric vehicle if needed.
How Much Energy Do You Need To Recharge An Electric Vehicle?
Electric vehicle energy is usually measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kWh is 1,000 watts, or one kilowatt (KW) when used for one hour.
A crucial thing to remember about energy for an electric car is that the size of the battery is irrelevant. But not only does the battery get used when you drive, but also to heat and cool when necessary. If you drive for 60 miles, your car will probably lose up to 20 kWh.
Power equates to the rate of the energy used. If you need 20 kWh, the battery life drops with more power used. You can use 20 KW in one hour, but also 1 KW in 20 hours. The basic 120V outlet will provide around 1.4 kW, so it would take around a little over half a day to draw 20 kWh. With an outlet with more voltage, it would take less time to draw as much.
Most people typically drive their cars for around 30 miles each day, which equates to 10 kWh. No matter if you are using high power for a short time or low power for a long time, the energy will be the same and dependent on how far you drive.
